LE MANS CLAIMS ANOTHER LEADER
Submitted by P. Michael Clarke
In an unbelievable turn of events, the fifth place overall #39 Gulf
McLaren BMW driven by Andrew Gilbert-Scott was engulfed in flames in
virtually the identical spot as the #26 Porsche 911 GT1, which was
leading the race just a few laps before.
The Gulf McLaren was nearing the end of the Hunaudiere Straight as it
slowed and literally burst into flames. Fortunately, the driver was able
to get out of the car, but not without creating a slight scare. Since
the driver sits in the middle of the cockpit in the McLaren, he had a
bit of a hard time evacuating the burning car. The corner workers must
now be wondering what the problem is in their area, as two cars have met
a fiery demise just a few meters from one another within the past half
hour.
