Both Lead Porsches Incur Trouble.
By Joe Hansen.
It's daybreak at Le Mans. But for Porsche, the light at the end the tunnel is getting darker by the minute. Within the past hour, the Joest Porsche #8 has been retired due to rear body and wing damage, the result of a previous incident.
Both Porsche 911 GT1s were running one-two, well out in front of the third-place Toyota GT One, when each incurred trouble within half an hour of each other.
The first car into the pits was Porsche #26, piloted by Allan McNish. The vehicle was smoking and, although details are sketchy, the car is definitely overheating. Word from the pits is that they are putting cooling conduits into the car.
Race leader Jorg Muller in Porsche #25 had an off-track excursion through the gravel trap. The car is currently having the undertray and front radiators repaired, extensive repairs by all counts.
The Toyota GT One car #29 will soon assume the lead at Le Mans. More details will follow as they become available.
